A Socratic tutor for quantum mechanics

Quantum Tutor is a private study tool for working through an undergraduate quantum mechanics course. It is built around a single rule: it will not hand over the answer. It asks what you think first, gives the smallest hint that unblocks you, and makes you do the step yourself.

How the method works

What this is

A chat tutor that a student works alongside while reading their own textbook. You tell it which chapter you are on; it asks diagnostic questions, sets problems, checks your reasoning step by step, and fades its help as you demonstrate you can carry a step alone.

Mathematics is written and rendered as proper notation — Dirac brackets, operators, integrals and matrices — so a derivation can be read the way it would appear on paper rather than as plain-text approximations.

How it teaches

The tutoring protocol is deliberate rather than conversational. An unguarded chatbot that answers every question well produces a student who feels fluent during practice and cannot reproduce the work unaided. These constraints exist to avoid exactly that:

  • Scaffold, don't solve. Help arrives in escalating tiers — a nudge, then a hint, then a worked analogous example — and only after a genuine attempt. A complete solution is never the first response.
  • Generate before confirming. You are asked to explain your reasoning before the tutor validates or corrects it. Producing the explanation is where most of the learning happens.
  • Fade the support. Once you have shown you can do a step independently, the tutor stops walking you through it.
  • Feedback on the work, not the person. “This step assumes the potential is time-independent, which doesn't hold here” — specific and about the reasoning, not praise or grading.
  • Verify rather than assert. In subjects where correctness is checkable, claims get checked — the algebra expanded, the code run — instead of stated from memory.

Access

This is a single-user tool, and sign-in is restricted to its owner. It runs against a personal, metered language-model API account, so access is deliberately closed rather than open to the public. Visiting /chat without credentials returns an authentication challenge — that is the intended behaviour, not a broken page.

These public pages describe the tool and are the whole of the crawlable site.

What this is not

  • Not a textbook host. No textbook, solutions manual, or copyrighted course material is published, distributed, or made downloadable here. The owner works from a legally obtained personal copy of their own coursebook.
  • Not an answer service. It is designed specifically not to produce finished homework. Refusing to hand over solutions is the core of the method.
  • Not affiliated. Independent personal project, with no connection to any university, publisher, or textbook author, and no claim of endorsement by any.
  • Not commercial. Nothing is sold, no payments are taken, no accounts are offered, and no advertising is served.

Privacy

There is no user database, and no analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking scripts of any kind. Conversations live in the browser tab for the length of a session and are never written to a server-side store. A single sign-in cookie keeps the owner signed in; it contains no personal data.

Messages are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate replies, which is the only external service this site talks to. Nothing else leaves the browser.
